The project was launched with the aim of making Killarney the first town in Ireland free of single-use coffee cups. Disposable cups were banned and customers were charged €2 for a reusable cup which they could then exchange for a clean cup or return for their money back. However, those behind the project say it’s flatlining as businesses are withdrawing from the initiative. This is because the government has failed to introduce a promised 20-cent charge at the till for the use of disposable cups, which would have encouraged people to bring a reusable cup with them. Jerry spoke to Johnny McGuire who’s co-president of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.
