For the Sake of Maia: A Tralee Dad’s Campaign to Hold Social Media Giants Accountable – May 2nd, 2024

Liam Walsh is originally from The Spa in Tralee. In October 2022, his 13-year-old daughter, Maia Walsh, was found dead in her home in Hertfordshire, in England. She would have turned 14 at the end of October.
Liam believes that his daughter was influenced into self-harming due to the content she was accessing online, and particularly TikTok.
He has been on a journey and a campaign for the past year and a half to try and get laws changed and get the regulators and politicians to hold big social media companies to account for the content that they allow on their platforms, which is in turn, accessed and viewed by children.
If you are affected by this story, you may  contact the Samaritans on 116 123. A site that provides resources to protect children online is https://www.webwise.ie/
