Yesterday Jerry spoke to Fiona Ahern who’s spent 12 years trying to get appropriate housing for her son Richard who has profound disabilities. Ms Ahern says their two-storey council home isn’t suitable for Richard and they need to move to a bungalow or have their house adapted. There is funding for older people and people with disabilities which allows their homes to be adapted to meet their needs. However, Sinn Féin councillor Tom Barry says there’s a gap between the grant given to people and the actual cost of the adaptation works. He says he’s had to contact the community welfare officer so that people can get financial support to pay for their housing adaptations.
