Retained firefighters suspended their strike action following talks with their union SIPTU and the Local Government Management Agency at the Workplace Relations Commission. The dispute had centred on pay and issues related to the recruitment and retention of on-call firefighters. Retained firefighters are technically part-timer workers and may have other jobs. However, in many instances, they are on call constantly except when they are on holidays.
Damian Quigg, acting station officer for Killorglin, is the county shop steward with SIPTU for retained fire fighters and part of the negotiations team for the National Firefighters’ Association.
