A Kerry man who was decorated for bravery on the battlefield during World War One, is to be commemorated at the unveiling of a new war memorial in England next week.
John Fitzgerald from Upper Rock Street, Tralee joined the British Army at 18, and had already risen to the rank of Company Sgt Major when the war broke out.
He fought with the British forces in both Italy and France, and was awarded with a medal for distinguished service and gallantry.
He died at home in Tralee just four months after being discharged from the army on medical grounds.
Mr Fitzgerald is one of 400 war heroes - who died as result of injury or illness contracted during the war - being honoured at the ceremony in Surrey next week.
