The former head of the Garda National Security and Intelligence Unit, Kerryman Micheal O’Sullivan, has been appointed as a lay member on the Judicial Council.

The Tousist native retired as Assistant Commissioner of An Garda Síochána last year.

He has been appointed as a lay member of the Sentencing Guidelines and Information Committee of the council.

The Council, established last December, is an independent body whose members are all of the judges in Ireland.

Lay member representation is required under the Judicial Council Act, and the Sentencing Guidelines Committee will be responsible for compiling guidelines designed to increase consistency in relation to criminal sentences.
