Taoiseach says spirit of Daniel O’Connell is as important as ever in today’s world
Taoiseach Micheál Martin T.D., accompanied by the Minister Patrick O’Donovan T.D. and Minister of State Kevin Moran, officiated at the State-led commemoration marking the 250th anniversary of the birth of Daniel O’Connell in Derrynane, Co. Kerry on Wednesday 6 August.

The Taoiseach says the spirit of Daniel O’Connell is as important as ever in today’s world, as the value of democracy, human rights and the rule of law are being challenged.

A formal State ceremony took place at Derrynane House near Cahersiveen this afternoon to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of The Liberator.

The 19th-century Kerry-born politician led the campaign for Catholic emancipation and is remembered as one of Ireland’s most influential political figures.

Throughout the ceremony, pro-Palestinian protesters could be heard demonstrating against the war in Gaza.

Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann, Kenmare native, Senator Mark Daly, believes this was fitting:
