Strong disagreement about civic honours for club football winners

There was strong disagreement about civic honours at the recent full Kerry County Council meeting.

Many councillors want a full council civic reception for the Dingle, An Ghaeltacht and Ballymacelligott football teams, who won the senior, intermediate, and junior all-Ireland club finals.

It is the first time ever in GAA history that three football clubs from the same county have achieved the triple .

The council's director of corporate services, Martin O’Donoghue said that full civic receptions are an exceptional awards "to be handed out rarely".

He said previous all-Ireland club football winners from Kerry have received civil receptions at municipal district (MD), and not county, level.

Mr O’Donoghue said it was the executive's "very, very strong recommendation" that full council honours are not "watered down".

Several councillors argued that Kerry clubs winning all three club titles is a once-in-a-lifetime achievement.

Full civic receptions have been approved for Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley, and the winner of the 2026 Young Scientist of the Year winner, Aoibheann Daly.

The issue of a full civic reception for the three teams will now be referred back to the council's Corporate Policy Group (CPG) for consideration.
