The Defence Forces believe Russian submarines are operating off the Kerry coast.
A report in The Sunday Times states this analysis is based on both intelligence and recent incidents, which indicate the presence of Russian sub-surface vessels in waters patrolled by the Irish navy.
It states military sources believe the vessels are Russian Kilo-class submarines, passing from the Black Sea to the Baltic Sea.

The operation of submarines would pose a difficulty for the Defence Forces who do not have the ability to monitor passing vessels or detect their presence, the report states.
