Planning has been sought for a new solar farm in North Kerry, which cover approximately 55 times the area of Croke Park.
Knockanure Renwables (Kerry) Ltd has applied to Kerry County Council for the solar farm around 9km northeast of Listowel.
According to the planning application, the project is made up of land from fourteen farming families in the areas of Kealid, Gortdromagownagh, Lissaniska (Newtownsandes), Beennanaspuck, Pilgrimhill, Shronebeirne, Lacka East, and Trien.
The application also seeks permission to fell 1.5 hectares of forestry, and the development of a 110 kilovolts switching station to allow for a future connection to a nearby substation.
The sites in question come to a total of 354 hectares, which is around 55 times the estimated area of Croke Park.
The applicants say the sites are suitable for solar development.
It says the temporary nature of solar panels also allows for the continued use of agricultural uses after the panels have been decommissioned, which will be after 40 years of operation.
The applicants say the solar panels will be placed on structures, supported on steel legs, and lifted over ground level, allowing animals such as sheep and poultry to continue grazing under the panels.
Kerry County Council is due to decide on the application by 3rd January next year.
