Over 44,000 patients missed appointments in the South/South West Hospital Group last year.
The hospital group, which includes Kerry and Cork, says this may have a knock-on effect on waiting times for other patients.
5,400 patients were removed from waiting lists after being contacted to see if they still wanted the appointment.

The data was released following a Freedom of Information request by the Irish Examiner.
