The National Parks and Wildlife Service has inspected a site in west Kerry where a painted white cross suddenly appeared.
The spray-painted cross appeared on a rock face overlooking Annascaul Lake.
This is both a special area of conservation and a special protection area under EU law.
NPWS staff carried out an inspection last week on the site which is understood to be under commonage.
A spokesperson for the NPWS also says local staff were asked for advice on the cleaning of the site.
The National Parks and Wildlife Service is in communication with the local community.
Radio Kerry has also contacted Kerry County Council for comment.
