A 33-year-old man has appeared in court accused of a string of criminal damage and assault charges at an IPAS centre in Tralee.
The man, with an address at Atlas House, McCowans Lane, Tralee, appeared in Mallow District Court today before Judge Colm Roberts.
He faces six charges arising from an incident at the IPAS centre in which he resides.
He faces one charge of assault causing harm on a security guard at the Atlas House IPAS centre in the early hours of this morning.
He is also accused of assaulting two other men at the same address, also earlier today.
The 33-year-old is accused of causing around €1,000 worth of damage to Atlas House IPAS centre, allegedly damaging a balcony window and a cupboard shelf.
He also allegedly resisted and wilfully obstructed a garda who was carrying out their duties as peace officer at the scene.
He appeared before Judge Roberts at Mallow District Court today, where he was represented by Killarney solicitor Pádraig O’Connell.
Mr O’Connell said his client is entitled to bail, has a constitutional right to bail, and has a presumption in favour of bail.
Garda Eilis Cronin outlined the state’s objections to bail.
These included the seriousness of the charges, and the nature and strength of evidence supporting the charges.
Judge Roberts remanded him in custody but with consent to bail, should he satisfy the conditions attached.
These include that he does not attend Atlas House, and does not come within 5km of it, as well as having no contact direct or indirect with the alleged injured parties.
He also must abide by a curfew between 10pm and 7am, cannot consume alcohol, and must attend all medical appointments and co-operate with medical advice.
Mr O’Connell asked Judge Roberts that appropriate medical treatment be provided for his client in Cork Prison, and that an Algerian interpreter be present at his next court appearance.
That will be in Kenmare District Court on Friday.
