Late songwriter Mickey MacConnell remembered as one-of-a-kind artist

The late songwriter Mickey MacConnell is being remembered as a one-of-a-kind artist.

The Fermanagh-born writer lived in Listowel for many years and wrote for the Kerryman and other publications.

His most famous song ‘Only Our Rivers Run Free’, which he wrote when he was just 18, became associated with the civil rights movement in the North.

Poet Gabriel Fitzmaurice from Moyvane was a personal friend of Mickey MacConnell’s, and frequently performed with him.

He says he was more than an entertainer; he educated and stimulated his audience and those around him.
