Killorglin Gardaí are warning dog owners to be vigilant following the attempted theft of pets in the area.

On Wednesday night at 10 o'clock, the owner of three sheepdogs heard a person whistling outside their home at Upper Tullig.

The person then noticed a wire tied to their property with a small red marking on it.

Garda Jamie Lenihan says they believe these coloured wires are used by thieves to identify the size of dogs on the property, before returning later to take the pets.

Garda Lenihan is urging people to take notes of vehicle details, including the model, colour and registration if possible, and notify Gardaí if they see anything suspicious.
