Killarney councillor says it’s crazy helmet and hi-vis wearing is not mandatory for e-scooter users

A Killarney councillor says it’s crazy that wearing a helmet and hi-vis are not mandatory for e-scooter drivers.

Independent councillor, Martin Grady raised a motion urging Kerry County Council to create a road safety campaign around e-scooter use.

He said in May last year new regulations were introduced in relation to e-scooters, which included a number of criteria.

Cllr Grady told the meeting he regularly sees these rules not being adhered to; adding that with the speeds the vehicle can get up to, helmet wearing should be mandatory.

He urged the council to liaise with relevant agencies and community bodies into an awareness campaign around safe and responsible usage.

The motion was seconded by independent councillor, Maura Healy-Rae.
