Kerry teenagers delay first time drinking when given in-school alcohol education

Kerry teenagers are more likely to delay their first time drinking when given in-school alcohol education.

That's according to a three-year study on the effects of Drinkaware's Junior Cycle Alcohol Education Programme by Maynooth University.

134 secondary schools, including seven from Kerry, have rolled out Drinkaware's programme to over 13,000 Junior Cycle students across the country.

The study also found the number of students who had never drank alcohol dropped sharply between 2nd and 3rd year of secondary school.

The findings indicate that ease of access, exposure, and parental permissiveness in the home are also important factors in when teenagers begin drinking.
