A Kerry TD is urging the Department of Transport to find a replacement service for the Kerry-Dublin PSO route.

It was announced this morning that Aer Lingus has cancelled all Stobart Air regional flights, including the Kerry-Dublin route, as Stobart has ceased trading.

The company says a failed takeover and the continued impact of the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in the decision.

In a statement to Radio Kerry, CEO of Kerry Airport John Mulhern says the news that Stobart Air has ceased operations with immediate effect is a most unfortunate development.

He says a line of communication on the recovery of the Kerry-Dublin route has already commenced with the Department of Transport.

Deputy Government Chief Whip and Kerry Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin says he has already been in touch with government Ministers and the Department on this issue.

He adds it's crucial for Kerry Airport and county that a replacement service is put in place.

Meanwhile, Kerry County Council says it will work closely with airport management to ensure the quick restoration of the route, and the future development of further air traffic routes into the county.

The council says the loss of the route at a time when the country is beginning to re-open is a significant blow.

This morning's announcement is concerning news for regional connectivity, according to the Transport Minister.

Minister Eamon Ryan says the Department of Transport will be engaging with stakeholders today and over the coming days to restore connectivity to the regional airports affected.

The Department has stated it's examining the implications of the announcement and cancellation of government-funded PSO routes, including Kerry-Dublin.

Minister for Education and Kerry Fianna Fáil TD Norma Foley says she will raise the matter at cabinet, and continue to engage with ministerial colleagues to find a resolution.

Minister Foley adds the Kerry-Dublin route is of enormous importance to the county and the Southwest region.
