A Kerry TD has said state bodies need to come together and ensure the St Finan’s landbank in Killarney is not sold to private developers.

The HSE-owned, former mental health hospital, closed in 2012 and has lain idle since.

The Land Development Agency has formally expressed an interest in acquiring half of the 13.2-hectare site, but not the hospital building itself as it’s not suitable for conversion to residential use.

The LDA is currently undertaking a review of the site, along with Kerry County Council, to explore other possible uses for the building as part of a wider development of the site.

Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly received a briefing from the HSE recently on progress with the St Finan's site, where it was said if there is no state interest in the entire site, it may well be sold off to developers.
