Kerry MEP Sean Kelly says he will decide by July at the latest whether to run in the presidential election.
The Fine Gael MEP would have to secure his party’s nomination to run in the presidential election, which will take place in November.
Other names touted as potential contenders in the party include former Vice-President of the European Parliament Mairead McGuinness.
Sean Kelly says Fine Gael is very aware it’s never won a presidential election, but he disagreed that this is a must-win for the party given its drop in support in the latest opinion poll.
MEP Kelly also praised leader of the party, Tánaiste Simon Harris, despite the recent drop in support.
The Kilcummin man said he is still mulling over whether to seek the party’s nomination for Uachtaráin.
