Kerry County Council is being called on to engage with schools to highlight road safety ahead of winter.
Sinn Féin councillor Paul Daly tabled a motion at the recent monthly meeting of Kerry County Council.
Cllr Paul Daly is calling on the council’s road safety officer to engage with primary and secondary schools to highlight road safety as the winter approaches.
He says this call comes following numerous incidents involving pedestrians and cyclists in the past 12 months.
In response to his motion, Kerry County Council stated between now and the end of the year, the council’s road safety officer is scheduled to deliver road safety education sessions at 18 primary schools and 12 post-primary schools.
The council says the projected student reach is 3,000 primary students and 1,500 post-primary school students.
Cllr Daly says he feels this is a drop in the ocean in terms of student population in the county and he suggested that the council organise zoom meetings as they could reach more students at the same time.
Cllr Daly also asked the council to work alongside the guards and RSA to provide hi-vis clothing for children of school-going age.
John Kennelly from Kerry County Council told the meeting he’d take the suggestion of an online meeting on board, as it would have a wider reach.
Mr Kennelly stated he’ll look into the hi-vis clothing, stating there was a scheme previously that provided it.
