Kerry County Council has issued a series of precautions and guidelines for people undertaking cold water swimming in the winter months.
The guidelines have warned of the risk of poor water quality during the winter months.
This is due to less stringent testing compared to water quality testing in May to September, as well as increased rainfall leading to runoff of pollutants into the water.
This can lead to an increased risk of waterborne pathogens, such as E. coli.
As well as this, the absence of lifeguards on duty, as well as rough waters and decreasing water temperatures can lead to an increased risk of drowning.
Swimmers are advised to never swim alone, to swim parallel to the shore and to wear a brightly coloured swim hat.
People engaging in open water swimming are also advised to wear a wet-suit, have warm drinks and clothing for after their swim, and to avoid alcohol before entering the water.
