An Ireland South MEP says the state should cover the cost of mandatory hotel quarantine for returning Erasmus students.

Billy Kelleher says the mandatory quarantine is a significant financial cost for Irish students returning from abroad, and their families.

The Fianna Fáil MEP added his party's youth organisation has suggested that the sending institution pay the hotel bill up front for returning students, and receive a refund from the Department of Higher Education.

He's urging the government to look favourably on this proposal.
