A farming organisation says it will be very curious to see data and evidence to support a claim that E. coli in Kells Bay could be linked to agriculture.

A ban on bathing is in place at the popular South Kerry beach.

On Monday, Kerry County Council took water samples at the Blue Flag beach at Kells Bay with the results showing an excessive E. coli level.

Following consultation with HSE Environmental Health, the council erected bathing prohibition signs.

The council says this result is probably associated with recent heavy rainfall flowing across farmland in the area.

However, the Kerry branch of the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers' Association (ICMSA) says it would be very curious indeed to see the data and evidence for this suggestion.

Kerry ICMSA Secretary, Noel Murphy who farms in Milltown, says the matter needs investigation but Kells area wouldn't be intensively farmed:

Further water sample results from Kells Bay are due tomorrow.
