Hedge cutters warned to be vigilant of Japanese Knotweed

Kerry County Council is urging people who are cutting roadside hedges to be aware of Japanese Knotweed.

The council says the invasive species should not be cut, strimmed or chipped as tiny fragments can cause the plant to regenerate.

Landowners are also advised not to dig, move or dump soil which may contain plant material as it can lead to the spread of Japanese Knotweed.

The council is asking anyone who comes across the plant to report it to their local Municipal District Office.

Hedge cutting can now take place until March 1^st next year and landowners are being reminded of their responsibility to ensure hedges on their property don’t become a traffic hazard.
