A recent inspection of Caherciveen Community Hospital has found that residents are highly satisfied with the care they receive, despite some concerns raised by the healthcare watchdog.
The unannounced HIQA inspection in June (18/06/2025) revealed that residents felt safe and well cared for.
Many praised the staff for being friendly and attentive, with one visitor calling the South Kerry facility "wonderful" and the community "lucky to have it."
Despite the positive feedback, the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) report highlighted areas where the hospital was not fully compliant with the Health Act.
These included issues with incident monitoring, where the hospital's system to learn from medication errors was found to be ineffective.
Management also failed to submit required documentation to HIQA as mandated by the centre’s registration conditions.
Infection control practices were a concern, with unclean nebulizer masks, improperly stored wound care products, and a poorly maintained laundry area included in the report.
The hospital has committed to improving cleaning routines and upgrading the laundry facilities.
Fire safety was also flagged, with concerns over the ability to evacuate residents from certain areas during low staffing levels.
Management pledged to improve evacuation training and ensure fire safety checks are completed, even on weekends.
Lastly, the report found gaps in individual care planning, particularly in relation to wound care and mobility assessments.
The hospital has promised to review care plans and provide additional staff training.
