An independent Kerry TD voted against the government's Residential Tenancies Bill in the Dáil last night.
Deputy Danny Healy-Rae took the opposite position to his brother Minister of State Michael Healy-Rae who supported the proposed new rent reforms.
Danny Healy-Rae says the bill - which passed in the Dáil - represents an intrusion on the constitutional and democratic rights of property owners.
Another Government-supporting independent TD, Gillian Toole, abstained.
Opposition parties voted against the bill claiming it will lead to higher rent rises for tenants.
However, the legislation which is expected to pass the Seanad today, offers minimum tenancies to renters of 6 years.
