Gardaí say the Killarney National Park fire could have started for a number of reasons.

The investigation into the cause of the Killarney National Park fire in April is nearing completion, with gardaí satisfied the fire started accidentally.

Inspector Garry Thompson from Killarney Garda Station says the public are used to hearing of gorse fires which have been started for the purpose of land clearing.

However, he says An Garda Siochána believes this wasn’t the cause of the fire that destroyed almost 3,000 hectares of the park.

Inspector Thompson says there are many ways the fire could have been started accidentally.
