Kerry householders and businesses are facing another day of disruptions to their water supply, after thousands of people were left without water yesterday.

Kerry County Council says crews were on site until the early hours of this morning, working on a burst water main which was the source of the problem.

The problem arose around 5pm yesterday evening when a 700mm trunk water main burst, between the treatment plant at Lough Guitane and the Sheheree reservoir.

Lough Guitane  supplies the Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme and is one of the biggest in the country.

The number of people whose supply was affected by the burst is believe to be over 50, 000; covering a wide area including Tralee, Castleisland, Firies, Farranfore, Castlemaine, Ballymacelligot, Fenit and surrounding areas.

Supply to the hospitals in Tralee and Killarney were prioritised and contact was also made with affected nursing homes.
