There are fears hazardous waste dumped outside Kilcummin will leak into the water system.

Labour councillor Marie Moloney says hundreds of florescent light tubes were dumped on the border of Kilcummin and Currow recently, next to a sign warning against dumping.

She says the fragile tubes will have to be removed by hand; usually, the council removes illegally dumped materials with an excavator.

Councillor Moloney, who believes the area was picked due to its remoteness, says it’s sad to see such illegal dumping in a place of scenic beauty.

She adds the mercury contained in the florescent tubes can be dangerous.
