Kerry County Council will write the Department of Agriculture seeking to enforce correct registration of horse ownership.
It follows a motion at the recent Castleisland-Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District meeting by Fianna Fáil councillor Fionnán Fitzgerald.
He says in certain instances horse owners are not correctly registering their ownership.
Cllr Fitzgerald compared this to cow ownership, where registration and ear tags among other means of identification are implemented.
He added where this isn’t the case the Department enforce non-compliance, and this should be the same within equine ownership.
The motion was seconded by independent councillor Charlie Farrelly, who said every horse owner should have their animal chipped.
