A former IT Tralee student has raised enough money to plant 15,000 native trees around Killarney National Park following the recent wildfire.

22-year-old Gearóid McEvoy, who is a biology student, raised around €15,000 in three days through Reforest Nation, a social enterprise he set up during the pandemic to restore Ireland's native woodlands.

Gearóid told The Irish Examiner that two land-owners around Killarney National Park have agreed to have 25 species of native trees planted on their land, as he is not allowed to plant them in the Park.

He said donations have come from as far away as Jamaica, the US, Indonesia and Australia.
