Council slammed for non-provision of lollipop warden on busy Castleisland school road
Cllr Charlie Farrelly

Independent councillor Charlie Farrelly tabled a motion requesting a school traffic warden on College Road, Castleisland during school times.

He says the area – which has three schools – becomes a bottleneck and dangerous for crossing.

He noted earlier in the year the council’s road safety officer visited the area to observe how busy the road gets and the dangers incurred at these times.

In response the council advised that there is no provision in the current budget to appoint a school warden for College Road.

It said it’ll assess the location and undertake a feasibility study to determine if it is warranted at this location and consider this for the next budget.

Cllr Farrelly responded that this answer is unacceptable given the councils road safety officer has already visited and seen the issues first hand.

He slammed the response, stating he’s beyond disappointed that there’s no provision to hire a lollipop person on one of the towns busiest roads for school traffic.

The motion was seconded by Fianna Fáil councillor Breandán Fitzgerald.
