Construction is underway at SSE’s landmark Tarbert Next Generation Power Station.
The Scottish multinational energy company's €300m investment means the plant will have a generation capacity of 300 megawatt (mw).
The site was originally home to an oil-fired power station, built in the 1960s, which stopped operating in 2023 after more than 50 years.
The SSE Tarbert Next Generation Power Station will be the first of its kind in the country to run on 100% hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) sourced entirely from waste feedstocks, and supplied in line with EU RED II sustainability standards.
SSE Group says it will future-proof the site by including the potential to convert hydrogen, ensuring Tarbert’s vital role in Ireland’s energy sector for decades to come.
It argues this approach will provide a lower-carbon alternative to traditional fossil fuels and support Ireland’s long-term climate and energy goals.
At the busiest phase, the project is expected to support 200 full-time construction jobs.
On its expected completion in 2027, the day-to-day running of the SSE Group station will create 14 new full-time jobs.
