It's claimed that a recent rockfall on Skellig Michael is being used as an excuse to keep it closed.

That's according to Mark Conway of Portmagee Development Group.

A rockfall in late July was revealed to be one of the reasons that the Office of Public Works decided not to reopen the island to visitors.

The OPW has carried out a sweep of the area and brought down some additional rocks as a safety measure.

The feasibility of imposing COVID-19 restrictions remains the main reason for keeping the Skelligs closed.

It's hoped that they will reopen to visitors in April or May next year.

Mr Conway says the reasons given are legitimate excuses, but there are ways around them.
