There are calls for a coordinated taskforce to be established following the recent fire that devastated parts of Killarney National Park.

Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly says lessons must be learned from this incident.

Deputy Pa Daly is urging the Minister of State for Heritage Malcolm Noonan to talk to Kerry County Council about creating this taskforce to deal with fires within the National Park.

He says it would involve the local authority, fire services and the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

The Sinn Féin TD says while everyone involved performed heroically last weekend, they could have done with more resources.

He has enquired with the Department of Housing and Heritage in relation to vacant rangers posts and a recruitment drive is now under way, which Deputy Daly says is vital.

Deputy Pa Daly also raised the rhododendron problem in the national park with Minister Noonan.
