The Parents’ Association of St Francis’ Special School in Beaufort is calling for the St Mary of the Angels campus to be adapted to a respite centre for adults with additional needs.
Yesterday, the association and school staff met with members of Kerry County Council to discuss adult day services and respite services in this county.
Principal of the school, Keith Bradley, says when children turn 18 and stop attending the school in Beaufort, they have a wait for services and then adapting to a new service in another part of the county can be very difficult for the adult with additional needs.
He says keeping adults who attended St Francis’ Special School on the campus at St Mary of the Angels for respite, is a no-brainer.
Jean O’Sullivan Casey is chair of the parents’ committee at St Francis Special School.
She says while there is a national policy moving adults with additional needs out of congregated settings such as St Mary of the Angels, adapting the campus for respite care would make total sense.
