103 breaches of employment law and abuse of workers’ rights were detected in Kerry over the past two years following investigations by the Workplace Relations Commission.
That’s according to new data provided to Sinn Féin.
The Workplace Relations Commission carried out 7,687 inspections around Ireland in 2020 and managed to recover almost €1.7m in unpaid wages for workers.
In Kerry, 103 breaches of employment law and abuse of workers’ rights were detected in the last two years during investigations by the WRC.
Since 2011, the WRC has recovered almost €18m in withheld wages for workers.
In over a third of the cases investigated, it found breaches by employers for non-payment of the minimum wage, employment permits, protection of young persons, annual leave and public holiday breaches, unpaid wages, among others.
Kerry Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly said despite being underfunded and under-staffed the WRC does fantastic work on behalf of workers across this state.
He said the organisation has only 53 inspectors carrying out this work, despite being authorised to recruit 90 inspectors in 2006.
Deputy Daly said it’s essential that additional inspectors are recruited immediately.
