REST IN PEACE BRIAN
Brian Byrne (78 yrs) Coolkeragh, Listowel, Co. Kerry, resident and proud Dubliner who passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on 28th June, 2026. Despite being a type 1 Diabetic, Brian knew no bounds as he set and broke records throughout his life; the 1st Diabetic to complete the Skerries Iron-man, breaking the 20 hour time barrier for running the Wicklow way (132Km) with his Crusaders, running his 100th Marathon on his 70th Birthday, establishing the Glanageenty Loopers train running club, raising with events like head & beard shaves, insane running challenges, the elevation of Everest on Carrantuohill (8.5x up & down in a single day) and the Head to Head coastal Challenge (600kms).
Needless to say, he deservedly won international recognition for his Sporting Achievement at the Lifescan awards in Canada for Diabetics in sport and has been inspiring young diabetics for decades to break norms by pioneering concepts in managing their diabetes and sport. He was an inspiration to many and will be missed by all who knew of his quick wit, his passion for running, his compassionate nature and his proud Dublin heritage.
He is survived by his wife Julie Byrne, his children Andrea, Maria, Ken and Joey, his stepchildren Sinead, Isabelle, CJ, their partners, as well as his loving Grandchildren, Elliot, Eva, Dillon, Aaron, Lauren, Abigail, Lorcan, Ardan and Zara. He follows on after his daughter Jean and stepdaughter Jessie to a restful eternal sleep but all who knew Brian know in their hearts he will "keep running up that road running up that hill" because that's the "deal he made with God".
The Byrne family would like to thank the countless Nurses, Allied health staff and Doctors from the Diabetic, Cancer and Palliative care of Tralee Hospital and Community services who have supported him throughout his cancer journey for the last 4 years and gave him a personal, caring & supportive and dignified passing.
"True to his bright nature, Brian suggested before his passing that attendees should wear bright colours to his services as a way to celebrate his life rather than mourn his loss in dullness".
