A commencement notice must be submitted to a local building authority before construction work begins on a new building or major renovation project.

During the first four months of this year alone, there’s been more commencement notices issued in Kerry than there was for the whole of last year.

In all of last year, construction started on 297 homes in the county. However, between January and the end of April this year 401 such notices have been issued in Kerry.

In January this year, construction started on 154 homes in Kerry; that was more than half of the entire number of commencements in the county during 2025.

However, that figure dropped significantly the following month; in February there were just 14 commencement notices issued in Kerry.

Having swapped the O Neill ball for Titleist, the relatively new to golf Mary Jo has really started to show some great form on the course. Despite horrendous weather conditions at the weekend, for the second year in a row in the 3Ts competition, Mary Jo stormed home with a wonderful score of 39 points. To her delight she will be heading to either the K-Club or Mount Juliet in Autumn to participate in the 24th year of the wonderful 3Ts (Turning the Tide of Suicide) Annual Golf Tournament.

Lady Captain Mary Garvey and all the Ladies at Beaufort Golf Club would like to thank Tom Tobin (Killarney Medals & Trophies Ltd) for his wonderful sponsorship of the 3Ts competition. And it is great to see so many ladies participating in this competition.

The French fishing trawler, Fastnet, ran aground at Been Bawn (Bín Bán) beach, west of Dingle Lighthouse on 14th December last (2025).

The vessel has now been partially removed.

The local volunteer report claims the yellow marine insulation has been found on numerous locations along the seashore and intertidal zone between Kinard Beach near Lispole (Lios Póil) and the Great Blasket Island (An Blascoad Mór).

He was reacting to the news, announced this morning, that Killarney had retained a spot in the top 10 cleanest towns in Ireland.

The number of learner drivers in Kerry increased in the space of a year.

That’s according to RSA figures released to the Irish Road Hauliers Association (IRHA) under Freedom of Information.

Over 10,600 (10,636) learner permit holders were registered in Kerry as of the end of March, up almost 300 (288) on the previous year.

IRHA President, Ger Hyland says the figures show the RSA is not making progress on driving test backlogs.

He believes that the Road Safety Authority is out of its depth and accused it of failing at road safety.

After a barren weekend for Kerry players on the prize front at both the Douglas and Riverdale (Nenagh) Scratch Cups, county honours will be on the line this Sunday in Deerpark with the staging of the County Adult Strokeplay Championships.

Play will be over 36 holes initially with a playoff for the top players in each of the three Mens grades as the County Board wishes all players taking part the very best of luck. Sunday’s timesheet will be announced nearer to the weekend as we wish to remind all competitors that the event is a dress code competition. June is a busy month itself with the staging of the Paul O’Sullivan Memorial Open in Listowel from June 18th-20th, the first time an Open will be held at a Kerry course for 14 years while the following weekend sees the Castleisland Scratch Cups take place on Saturday June 27th, the same day our ‘Songo’ Fundraiser takes place in the Na Gaeil GAA Clubhouse in Tralee that night.

Elsewhere details of our U16 programme for the summer have been confirmed. Firstly, the trials for the Kerry U16 team are as follows: (i) Thursday June 18th Deerpark 6pm (ii) Wednesday June 24th Tralee 6pm and (iii) Saturday July 4th County Strokeplay in Listowel 9.30am. All play over 36 holes with each round treated as an 18-hole card with best four out of six cards to count towards a player's score. We await full details of the Munster and National Inter-County events.

Tralee Parnells U15 Féile Team
The countdown is on for the Tralee Parnells U15 Boys as they complete their final preparations for the regional Féile finals on June 20th. The boys now know their venue - they will be travelling to New Ross in Wexford. The boys have put in all the hard work — we just need one final push from the community to help get them over the line.
The team and their supporters are organising a Pub Quiz in the Ballymac Bar, Boherbue on Saturday 13th June at 8pm. Come along and test your knowledge. Teams of 4 are €40. Great prizes to be won and there will be a raffle on the night.
Donations can still be made through the team's GoFundMe page - www.gofundme.com/f/parnells-u15-2026. Check out all our social media pages.
U14 Boys
Our U14 hurlers played a back game against Ballyduff in the County League last Friday night in Caherslee. A stronger Ballyduff team came out on top after a good battle. Parnells will now play Causeway in Caherslee this Friday night 12th June at 7pm in the Division 2 semi-final with the winners playing Abbeydorney in the final after Feile. Please come along and support the boys.
U10 Boys
Our U10s had another great training session in Caherslee last Tuesday night with fast paced matches and fantastic drills. Well done to all the boys.
Poc Fada
The Kerry Poc Fada competition took place over the June Bank Holiday weekend. It was a very successful one for the Tralee Parnells competitors with Diarmuid Quirke retaining his title in the Senior Mens competition and Anna Chute and her sister Sarah Chute winning the Senior Ladies and U16 competitions respectively. This was a fantastic achievement for the players themselves and the club and they now go on to represent Kerry at the Munster Poc Fada Finals on June 13th in Limerick. Well done to everyone in organising the event and in particular to Kerry Camogie officer Lynda Harris. Well done as well to all the ball spotters on the day.
Kerry Senior Camogie
Hard luck to the Kerry Camogie team who lost to Antrim in Round 2 of the Intermediate Championship last Saturday. A special mention to our club players Orla Leahy and Anna Chute, who are part of the panel.
Senior Hurlers
Our Senior hurlers are continuing their preparation for the County Senior Championship which starts on Friday 19th June when Parnells will play Abbeydorney in Austin Stacks Park in the 1st match of the competition.
Club Lotto
Our club lotto draw takes place every second Monday at 8:00pm.
You can play online via Clubforce.
Entry options:
•	1 line – €2
•	3 lines – €5
Your continued support is greatly appreciated.

Listowel Racecourse won the Racecourse Award at the Irish Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards last week at the Keadeen Hotel in Newbridge, Co Kildare.
The winner of the ITIEA award is chosen by Irish Stable Staff Association evaluating each racecourse on criteria relating to facilities for stable staff with the aim of improving standards at all racecourses in Ireland.
The prize was €2,500 to spend on upgrading facilities to benefit stable employees. Paddy Madden and Maurice Carroll from the track were on hand to receive their award.

Doneraile trainer Brendan Walsh enjoyed a productive time at Listowel with two winners from three runners at the Bank Holiday fixture.
The second of those arrived via Knockbrack Rambler, a 12-1 chance, in the John B Keane Beginners’ Chase last Monday.
Jockey Philip Enright made most, if not all, of the running on the winner, owned and bred locally in Abbeyfeale by Vincent and Mary O’Connor.
Knockbrack Rambler was challenged after the final fence by 4-1 chance Tropical Image but he hung on for a half length success.
Walsh also sent out Le Fanu to win on the opening day of the Listowel meeting with Le Fanu at 11-1.

Trainer Michael O’Callaghan can look forward to a trip to Royal Ascot after Celeron made a striking impression on debut in the six-furlong maiden for two-year-olds at the Curragh last Wednesday.
The market didn’t predict this one as the winner returned at 18-1. The further he went under jockey Jamie Powell, the better Celeron got as he extended to a two-length margin at the line.
The Windsor Castle Stakes, up to six furlongs for the first time and restricted to horses by stallions that raced over slightly longer distances, is the race earmarked and that will be on Wednesday, June 17.

Trainer Danny O’Leary enjoyed the second winner of his career when Getaway Henry made off with the one of the two-mile handicap hurdles at Clonmel on Friday.
The 22-1 chance scored by over two lengths in the hands of Listowel jockey Gavin Brouder.
O’Leary is based near Charleville and his first winner arrived with the same horse two years ago.
“He is an older horse and he kind of has a mind of his own,” Brouder said of the nine-year-old.
“Early on he was travelling well and I knew down the back that anything that came to him was going to bring him forward. He hit the line well and pricked his ears. He enjoyed himself.”

The council says it’s continuing to examine the preferred course of action in relation to the remaining locations including cutting some of the locations under Section 40 of the Wildlife Act, 1976 (as amended) and billing the landowners for the cost.
