Work to begin shortly on Carney homestead on Blasket Islands

Work on the Carney homestead on An Bhlascaoid Mór are to begin shortly.

That’s according to Blasket Island descendant, retired Springfield police detective Michael Carney, the son of the late Dr Mike Ó Cearna.

Michael wrote to the OPW from the United States last year after storms damaged the historic homestead on the island, which is adjacent to the old school house.

Michael says following OPW assessments on the island, contractors submitted proposals currently being reviewed.

The work on the Carney house is phase two of works on the Great Blasket, which began with the renovation of the home of Tomás Ó Criomthain.
