Wednesday Evening Sports Update


Champions League holders Liverpool are in Belgium this evening for group stage action.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have three points from their opening two games, and take on Genk at 8pm.

Napoli travel to Red Bull Salzburg in the other Group E tie.

Chelsea are about to start their Group H fixture against Ajax of Amsterdam.

Lille host Valencia elsewhere in that group.


Dublin ladies stars Sinéad Goldrick and Siobhan McGrath are among the three nominees for the TG4 Players’ Player of the Year for 2019.

Galway’s Louise Ward is the other player nominated at senior grade.

Tipperary’s All-Ireland final player of the match Orla O’Dwyer is up for Intermediate Players’ Player of the Year, alongside teammate Aishling Moloney and Meath goalkeeper Monica McGuirk.

The winners will be revealed on Saturday November 16th.


Ireland’s cricketers have suffered another embarrassing loss in qualifying for the T20 World Cup.

They lost by 10 runs to Canada in Abu Dhabi.

Stuart Thompson top scored for the Irish with 28 not out.

Ireland’s remaining qualifiers see them play Jersey on Friday and Nigeria on Saturday.


Rory McIlroy has confirmed his plans to play for Ireland at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

The Down native had previously stated it was “more than likely” he would do so.

McIlroy withdrew from playing in the 2016 Olympics due to concerns over the Zika virus in Brazil.
