Wednesday Evening Sports Update

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt insists Jonathan Sexton will be fit for next week’s Six Nations opener against England.

The World Player of the Year has been out of action since suffering a calf injury during Leinster’s festive defeat to Munster.

Schmidt is confident that Sexton will play in Saturday week’s competition opener at the Aviva.

While confident they could cope without Sexton, captain Rory Best says his presence is key in retaining the Six Nations championship.

Manchester City will formally seal their place in the League Cup final tonight.

They take a 9-nil lead to Burton Albion for the second leg of their semi-final.

Pep Guardiola is expected to use the game to help with the match fitness of returning players like Benjamin Mendy and Kevin de Bruyne.

Kick off at the Pirelli Stadium is at 8.

Gonzalo Higuain (PR: Ig-wye-een) won’t play in Chelsea’s semi final second leg with Tottenham tomorrow night.

His move from Juventus is due to be completed this evening, as he’s already completed a medical with the Premier League club.

Barcelona have won the race to sign highly sought-after Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The La Liga giants have paid 75-million euro for the 21-year old, but it’s a fee that could rise to 86-million with various add-ons.
