It remains unclear whether Skellig Michael has suffered at the hands of recent storms. The prolonged adverse weather conditions have made it impossible for OPW staff to land safely on the island. It’s hoped the Air Corps will perform a visual inspection of the site within the next week or so. Skellig Michael is open to the public from mid-May to end September, when guide staff are present and when weather conditions permit. Annually OPW maintenance staff begin work on the Island a number of weeks in advance of the public opening. In particular, they deal with Health and Safety hazards left over from the winter storms.
