It’s being reported that the number of visitors to Skellig Michael is one and a half times greater than what is deemed environmentally safe.

The Irish Examiner reports that figures released by the Office of Public Works show that last year there were 16,792 landings on the island.

However, the outgoing management plan for the UNESCO World Heritage Site recommends that 11 thousand 100 is the ‘sustainable’ number of visitors for the island.

Skellig Michael is world renowned for its ancient monastic settlement and is also one of the country’s most important sites for breeding seabirds.
