Veronica Guerin’s sister urges Kerry County Council not to support Gemma O’Doherty’s Presidential bid

Veronica Guerin’s sister has emailed every member of Kerry County Coucil urging them not to support Gemma O’Doherty’s bid to become an official candidate in the Presidential election.

Ms O’Doherty has claimed that there was state collusion in the murder of Veronica Guerin in 1995.

Gemma O’Doherty claimed at an anti-corruption meeting in Waterford last month that Ms Guerin “was murdered by the State because she was getting far too close to some of the State’s very dirtiest secrets.

Veronica Guerin’s sister Claire O’Brien, who lives in Tralee, said Ms O’Doherty’s comments were outrageous, scurrilous, hurtful and offensive.

In her email, Ms O’Brien asked Kerry Councty Councillors to cast their vote to someone more deserving of it.

The Council is meeting today to decide which candidate they will support in the upcoming presidential election.

American-based entrepreneur Peter Casey is in Kerry for the meeting and has been canvassing councillors ahead of their decision.

It’s understood both Mr Casey and Gemma O’Doherty will be proposed and seconded before a final decision is made.
