Transport Minister to talk to insurance companies about Kerry TDs ‘Cars for Bars’ scheme

The Minister for Transport Shane Ross says his department will discuss a Kerry Deputy’s ‘cars for bars’ scheme with insurance companies.

Fine Gael Deputy Brendan Griffin explained to the Oireachtas Transport Committee that the scheme involved a number of insured drivers signing up to a roster for driving people home from the pub between the hours of 6pm and 12am from Monday to Thursday.

The scheme had to be scrapped when they were told by insurance companies that they couldn’t be insured if they were on a roster.

Deputy Griffin said pubs are a key part of the tourism and social infrastructure in rural Ireland and asked the Minister to speak to insurance companies.
