Institute of Technology Tralee students have passed a plebiscite on paying additional fees to use the new Kerry Sports Academy.
On Monday, the college’s 3,500 students had the opportunity to vote on whether or not to accept a €95 annual charge for membership of the new academy.
The Kerry Sports Academy was completed earlier this year and has a gym, an aerobics and dance studio, hydrotherapy pool, an all-weather synthetic pitch, a GAA pitch and full-sized athletics track.
On Monday, Institute of Technology Tralee students were asked to vote on a plebiscite to accept a €95 annual charge for membership of the Kerry Sports Academy.
At the moment, membership of the gym costs €90 per semester or €180 for the academic year; the college says this is the lowest possible opt-in membership, that’s why they proposed that every student pay €95 a year as part of their student contribution charge.
3,500 students had the option to vote on Monday, there was a turnout of 835 students, with 79% of those voting yes to the plebiscite.
This means every registered student will have unlimited access to the gym facilities, year round, during opening hours for the €95 charge.
