IT Tralee and Cork Institute of Technology have submitted a formal application to become the Munster Technological University.
The application has been sent to Minister for Education Joe McHugh.
The Higher Education Authority will now invite an independent advisory panel to evaluate the application, which will include site visits to the Tralee and Cork campuses.
The panel will report to the minister, who will make the final decision.
The Munster Technological University would be the State’s second technological university.
