Tralee advocate says Judges should explain reasons for sentences to victims of crime

Judges should explain their reasons for deciding on sentence terms to the victims of crime. That’s according to Tralee woman Mairead Fernane, Founder and National Chairperson of Victim Assistance. Judge Gavel2She believes a victim of a crime would benefit greatly, if the judge presiding over their case explained why he decided to hand down a sentence to the individual who committed a crime against them. Two men involved in the robbery of an elderly man in rural west Clare recently received three-year suspended sentences. Mairead Fernane says pursuing a trial through the courts can be a grueling experience for the victims of crime.
